Bakuchiol skincare frequently asked questions
What is bakuchiol and what does it do for the skin?
Bakuchiol is a plant-based skincare ingredient extracted from the seeds and leaves of the babchi plant (Psoralea corylifolia). Used for centuries in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, bakuchiol is known for its ability to help calm, soothe, and support the skin. Often described as a natural alternative to retinol, bakuchiol helps to smooth the appearance of fine lines and improve skin texture, without the irritation commonly associated with vitamin A.
Is bakuchiol a good alternative to retinol?
Bakuchiol is often chosen as a gentler alternative to retinol. Both ingredients are used to help improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone. However, retinol is a vitamin A derivative that can sometimes cause dryness or irritation. Bakuchiol offers similar skin-smoothing benefits while being generally better tolerated by sensitive or reactive skin.

Is bakuchiol skincare suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes. Bakuchiol is widely known for being gentler on the skin than many traditional retinol products.
Because of this, it is often recommended for people with sensitive skin who want the benefits of retinol-like ingredients without the potential irritation.
Can you use bakuchiol skincare while pregnant?
Bakuchiol is not a vitamin A derivative like retinol, which is why some people choose it as an alternative during pregnancy. However, skincare routines during pregnancy can vary, so it is always best to check with a healthcare professional before introducing new skincare products.

Can bakuchiol be used morning and night?
Yes. Bakuchiol skincare is gentle enough to be used both morning and evening. Unlike retinol, it is not known to increase sun sensitivity in the same way, which means it can be included in daytime skincare routines alongside sunscreen.
What percentage of bakuchiol should I use in skincare?
While percentages are often highlighted in marketing, the concentration of a single ingredient does not always determine how effective a product will be. Bakuchiol works alongside other actives in a formulation, and factors such as ingredient balance, stability and delivery all influence how well a product performs on the skin.
For example, our Eve Bio-Retinol Line Reduction Serum was blind tested alongside five leading retinol serums for its ability to stimulate type I collagen synthesis in human skin cells. In this independent in-vitro study, the Antipodes formula outperformed the retinol serums tested, showing a 55% increase in collagen production.
